The Manipur government will send a senior police officer to the National Capital Region to help the Uttar Pradesh Police investigate the death of a 22-year-old Manipuri man. Pravish Chanam had gone missing from a concert in Greater Noida on September 8. His body was found the next day in Noida’s Nithari area, around 40 km away.
On Wednesday, the Manipur government issued an order, which Scroll.in accessed, stating that Additional Director General of Police Pramod Asthana “will look into the circumstances that led to the death of the student”. Asthana, who is the chief of the intelligence wing and law and order department in the Manipur Police, will leave for Delhi on Thursday.
Chanam had come to Delhi from Hyderabad on September 7 to attend the concert in Greater Noida, and had stayed at a friend’s house in Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave. Chanam’s relatives said his friends lost him in the crowd at the concert.
After the death, there were reports that the police cremated Chanam on September 13 without contacting his relatives. His relatives claimed that the police took the action despite Chanam’s brother filing a missing persons complaint on September 9. After an internal inquiry, three officials, including two sub-inspectors, were suspended on September 14.
