The National Stock Exchange Nifty ended at a record high of 10,153.10 on Monday, gaining 67.70 points. The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex, too, soared 151 points to close at 32,423.76.
The surge came ahead of the two-day US Federal Reserve monetary police meeting that begins on Tuesday.
Shares of Bharti Infratel jumped 4.55%, making it the top gainer on the Nifty. It was followed by Bajaj Auto (+3.71), Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd (+3.08%) and Hindustan Unilever (+2.89%). Tata Steel (-1.09%), ONGC (-0.90%) and Tata Power (-0.83%) were the worst performers on the index.
It was the first time since August 2 that the Nifty Bank sub-index closed above the 25,000 mark, at 25,046.90. Nifty Mid-cap also ended at a fresh record, closing high for the third consecutive session.
On the Sensex, Bajaj Auto (+3.57%), Hindustan Unilever (+2.77%) and Larsen & Tubro (+2.09%) were the top performers. ITC, Tata Steel and ONGC were the biggest losers. The BSE Mid-cap index closed 0.73% higher at 16,089, and the Small-cap index ended 0.87% up at 16,833.
Other Asian markets also surged as geopolitical tensions in the Korean Peninsula eased. Japan’s Nikkei 225 closed 102.06 points up; the Hong Kong Hang Seng ended more than 350 pints up; the Taiwan TSEC 50 Index closed 51 points higher; and the Shanghai SE Corporate Index rose by nine points.
