The Indian Under-17 boys team finished in seventh place at the Youth Olympic Games Rugby Sevens Qualifiers, held at Tainan in Chinese Taipei on September 9 and 10, reported PTI on Monday
After three successive defeats by heavyweights Malaysia, Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei, the boys dug deep and defeated a spirited United Arab Emirates team to end the first day on a high, Rugby India said in a release.
India, led by Narasing Marndi of Odisha, finished seventh after defeating Laos 24-5.
Japan were crowned champions after defeating Thailand in the final by 43-0 and Chinese Taipei secured third place defeating Malaysia 40-7.
The Indian team participated under the aegis of the Indian Rugby Football Union.
Ten teams, Hong Kong, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, UAE, Uzbekistan, India and hosts Chinese Taipei, participated in the tournament.
