The horror movie It, adapted from Stephen King’s eponymous bestseller, has grossed more than $179 million worldwide on its opening weekend, Variety reported. Directed by Andy Muschietti, the movie is about seven children who are being terrorised by a clown named Pennywise, played by Bill Skarsgard.
The supernatural horror film has captured 82% of the market share in the United Kingdom with a gross of $12.3 million, and is earning especially well in Russia, Australia, and Brazil. At $117.2 million, It has had the third largest opening weekend of 2017 in North America after Beauty and the Beast and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 .
A sequel is already in the works, with producer New Line Cinema confirming that Gary Dauberman, writer of Annabelle and The Nun, has been hired to work on the script. Muschetti is also expected to return as director for the sequel.
