Greta Gerwig, a prominent name on the American independent film scene, has taken the leap to direction. Her film Lady Bird stars Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, The Lovely Bones) as Christine McPherson, a rebellious teenager who is mostly at loggerheads with her well-meaning mother, Marion, played by ten-time Emmy Award nominee Laurie Metcalf. Christine studies in a Catholic high school and is desperate to leave small town Sacramento, and move to New York. Gerwig herself grew up in Sacramento and moved out to New York to pursue an acting career.
Gerwig has previously acted in indie hits like Frances Ha (2012) and Mistress America (2015). Her supporting performance in the critically acclaimed 2016 indie 20th Century Women was noted by critics. Lady Bird recently had its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. The trailer was released on Tuesday.
