A 25-year-old Indian student died in Houston, about a week after she was rescued from a lake in Texas in the United States, where Hurricane Harvey caused widespread destruction, PTI reported on Monday. Shalini Singh and her friend Nikhil Bhatia, both students of A&M University, had gone for a swim in Lake Bryan on August 28, when a current had pushed them deeper and nearly drowned them.
They were rescued and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Bhatia had died on August 29.
Singh was originally from Delhi and had gone to the United States just a few months ago to pursue a master’s course in public health. She will be cremated in Bryan on Tuesday, the news agency quoted officials from the Indian Consulate in Houston. Consul General of India in Houston Anupam Ray had been monitoring the medical requirements of the two students.
So far, at least 35 people have died because of Hurricane Harvey. The storm has caused devastating floods in Houston and several other parts of Texas.
