India on Sunday urged North Korea to refrain from actions that “adversely impact peace and stability in the region and beyond”. The statement comes hours after Pyongyang said it had successfully tested a hydrogen bomb.
“The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has once again acted in violation of its international commitments,” the Centre said. “India also remains concerned about the proliferation of nuclear and missile technologies, which have adversely impacted India’s national security.”
This was North Korea’s sixth underground nuclear test since 2006. It triggered an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on Sunday morning. This quake was five to six times more powerful than the seismic activity recorded after Pyongyang’s fifth nuclear test.
On Saturday, North Korea had claimed it had developed an “advanced hydrogen bomb” with “great destructive power”.
Other countries react
President Donald Trump condemned North Korea for conducting a nuclear test that was “very hostile and dangerous to the United States”. “North Korea is a rogue nation, which has become a great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success,” he said on Twitter.
China urged North Korea to put an end to its “wrong” actions, threatening to fully enforce the resolutions of the United Nations on the country.
South Korean President Moon Jae-In called for a National Security Council emergency meeting soon after the North’s test was detected. Seoul’s military has raised its alert level.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said the hydrogen bomb test was “an extremely regrettable act” that was “in complete disregard of the repeated demands of the international community”, Reuters reported.
French President Emmanuel Macron urged the UN Security Council to take action against the isolated country and “treat this new provocation with the utmost firmness”. British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson said Pyongyang’s nuclear test was “reckless” and a “provocation”.
Russia warned North Korea of “serious consequences” and urged the country to “keep cool” and “refrain from any actions that could lead to a further escalation of tensions”.
