The West Bengal Police on Thursday said they had found the children of one of the key petitioners in the triple talaq case. Earlier in the day, Ishrat Jahan had complained to the police, saying her husband disappeared with two of their four children.

Officers found the children in Bardhaman. A policeman from the Golabari Police Station said Jahan’s husband had taken them to a relative’s place, ANI reported.

Jahan – one of the five women who had challenged the Islamic practice of triple talaq in the Supreme Court – had complained that her husband had kidnapped the two children in Howrah. She had filed a complaint with the Golabari Police Station in the district. She is a resident of Hosrah’s Pilkhana area.

On August 24, Jahan had alleged that she had been receiving threats since August 22, when the Supreme Court had struck down the practice of instant talaq, calling it unconstitutional. She had urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to provide her and her family police protection. She had also alleged that her husband’s family had threatened her for challenging Islamic laws.

“People had serious objections with my decision to move the apex court, even my parents were against it,” Jahan told The Quint in an interview. “But I refused to budge. The neighbourhood where I stay is dominated by the Muslim community, and lot of men are angry with me.”

Her husband had divorced her over the phone from Dubai in 2014 by uttering “talaq” three times, after which she had involved herself in petitioning against the practice.
