In its ninth season, Kaun Banega Crorepati, the popular quiz show hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, had Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government’s policies as the evening’s defining feature. There were questions about the Modi government’s policies, including “Which notes were demonetised by Reserve Bank in November?” and “Which country did Narendra Modi visit in July 2017?”.
There were also plugs for the Digital India campaign, with KBC wiring the money directly to contestants. The show is sponsored by Reliance Jio, the company for which the prime minister appeared in front-page advertisements last September.
Seventeen years after it made its debut on Indian television, the show continues to have 15 questions ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1 crore. When the 10th question is reached, a 16th question is unlocked, which is a jackpot for Rs 7 crore. Each question can be answered in a maximum time limit of 45 seconds and instead of the usual phone-a-friend, there is a video call to a friend.
