Garbine Muguruza beat Venus Williams in straight sets on Saturday to win her first Wimbledon title. The Spaniard beat the five-time champion 7-5, 6-0 on Centre court. She has now become the first Spanish woman to win the singles at Wimbledon since her coach Conchita Martinez in 1994.
“I grew up watching (Venus) play, so it’s incredible to play the final (against her),” Muguruza said after her win. “(The nerves) are inside, of course I was nervous. It was very tough (the first set), we both had chances. Two years ago I lost to Serena in the final and she told me one day I’d win.”
This is Muguruza’s second major title, adding to the French Open title she had one last year.
Williams was hoping to be the oldest Wimbledon singles champion in the Open era, but was completely overpowered by the 23-year-old in the second set. Williams was playing her first Wimbledon final since 2009.
“Congratulations Garbine, amazing, I know how hard you work. Well done today, beautiful,” said Williams. She also had a message for her sister Serena. “I miss you. I tried my best to do the same things you do but I think there’ll be other opportunities, I do.”
