A social activist in Tamil Nadu’s Kodiakanal hill station has filed a petition with the sub-registrar against the proposed marriage of human rights campaigner Irom Sharmila. In his plea, V Mahendran has argued that Kodaikanal’s safety will be at stake if Sharmila and her fiance, British national Desmond Coutinho, settle there permanently after their wedding, PTI reported on Saturday.

Mahendran further pointed out that Coutinho was in-charge of a website involved in various activities around the world. Sharmila and Coutinho had moved to Kodaikanal after losing in the Manipur Assembly elections in March.

However, an advocate has expressed doubts about whether the petitioner had any “locus standi” to file such objections. Subramanian told PTI that he was doubtul there were any valid grounds for the activist to challenge Sharmila’s wedding.
