Andy Roddick is one of the most successful American tennis players in the world, with 32 titles in his 12-year professional career. But, as it turns out, the now 34-year-old, it appears, was not as attached to the trophies he had won.
Roddick’s wife, Brooklyn Decker, has revealed that the former world No 1 threw away nearly all of his trophies during a cleaning drive at their home in Texas.
“We have his US Open trophy,” Decker told People magazine. “But all his other trophies Andy threw away in the garbage.”
Roddick shot to fame at the age of 21 after winning the US Open title in 2013. He still remains the last American men’s singles players to win a major. He went on to play in four Grand Slam finals, but lost all of them to Roger Federer.
“It was really upsetting,” Decker said. “He did it one day when I was out of town. He decided that these don’t mean success to me, these don’t define me and I don’t really care to have these material things sitting around the house, so he threw them in the trash. I think he saved a few but they are not on display.”
Roddick retired from the game in 2012 and works occasionally as a tennis expert on television.
