Grandmaster and former world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta beat Aleksander Wohl of Australia to clinch gold at the Commonwealth Chess Championships in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Gupta was in fine form in the final round as Wohl found it difficult to break his defence. Playing white, the Indian adopted a queen-pawn game, while Wohl chose an off-beat system that came up short. Gupta dominated proceedings there after and took just 24 moves to wrap the tie.
Vaibhav Suri won silver while the bronze went to Tejas Bakre. Suri played out a draw with fellow Grandmaster Abhijeet Kunte, who finished fourth, while Bakre edged past MS Thej Kumar.
Meanwhile, in the Women’s Championship, Swati Ghate emerged victorious after defeating Indian junior champion Kumar Gaurav. Mary Ann Gomes picked up silver, while last year’s champion Tania Sachdev settled for bronze.
