At least 14 people are feared dead and many others trapped in debris after a landslide hit Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare district on Tuesday, PTI reported quoting unidentified officials. Several parts of the state have been witnessing incessant rainfall for the past four days.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Jalash Pertin said there were low chances of finding survivors. The landslide took place around 3.30 pm and hit three dwellings in Laptap village.
Rescue teams have not been able to reach the spot as the road leading to the village has been blocked by a number of landslides triggered by heavy downpour. Villagers are carrying out the rescue operations, NDTV reported.
Road transport was affected after one near the Civil Secretariat in Itanagar on Sunday. A power house near Raj Bhawan had suffered severe damage, while Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein’s house was also affected.
Another landslide took place on the Naharlagun-Itanagar road.
A three-year-old child was washed away near the police colony in Itanagar on Sunday.
Water in all the major rivers that flow through Arunachal Pradesh, including the Barapani, Senki View and Chandranagar rivers, are above the danger level. Officials said 15 granaries and several houses had been inundated by the Yomgo river.
The weather department has predicted more rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh in the coming days.
