A court in Bihar’s Jehanabad district has sentenced two brothers to five years in jail for drinking in the dry state. Mastan Manjhi and Senter Manjhi, who were found guilty under the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016, will also have to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh, failing which they will have to spend an additional year in prison, PTI reported on Tuesday.
This is the first conviction since the Bihar government banned the sale and consumption of alcohol in the state in April, 2016.
Excise Department officials had arrested the two daily wage earners from Jehanabad’s Purvi Oota locality on May 29. A First Information Report was lodged against them after a medical examination confirmed the presence of alcohol in their blood samples, reported The Indian Express.
