Seventh-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova reached her first Wimbledon quarter-final in 10 years on Monday with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Polish ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska.

Kuznetsova, a former US and French Open champion, crushed 37 winners in her victory, which gave her a last-eight clash against Garbine Muguruza, who upset world No 1 Angelique Kerber in their fourth round match.

Ostapenko’s milestone

Jelena Ostapenko advanced to her first Wimbledon quarter-final as the French Open champion finally converted her eighth match point to defeat Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6 (6) on Monday.

Latvian 13th seed Ostapenko, the 2014 junior Wimbledon champion, squandered seven match points in the second set before eventually seeing off the Ukrainian world number five to make just her second last eight appearance at a major.

The 20-year-old, whose triumph in Paris last month made her only the third player born in the 1990s to win a Grand Slam, faces five-time Wimbledon winner Venus Williams for a place in the semi-finals.

Williams’ impressive run continues

The thirty-seven-year-old became the oldest woman to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 23 years when she beat Ana Konjuh in the fourth round on Monday.

Williams, the US 10th seed, beat the Croatian 27th seed 6-3, 6-2 on Centre Court, becoming the oldest player to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals since Martina Navratilova in 1994.

At 19, Konjuh was not even born when five-time champion Williams made her Wimbledon debut in 1997.

Rybarikova makes merry

Unseeded Magdalena Rybarikova reached her first Wimbledon quarter-final on Monday with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Croatian qualifier Petra Martic.

The world No 87 from Slovakia will face Coco Vandeweghe of the United States for a place in the semi-finals.

Vandeweghe marches on

Coco Vandeweghe moved into her second Wimbledon quarter-final with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki on Monday.

Vandeweghe, who also made the last eight in 2015, will bid for her second Grand Slam semi-final appearance in 2017 when the American 24th seed faces Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova.

Danish fifth seed Wozniacki has never won a Grand Slam and has now failed to get past the last 16 in all 11 of her visits to Wimbledon.
