With a box office haul in the region of over Rs 1,800 crore, Aamir Khan’s latest blockbuster Dangal is one of the most successful Indian productions of all time. A bulk of the business has come from China, where the wrestling drama has emerged as one of the biggest hits of all time.
Shuajiao Baba (Let’s Wrestle, Father) has reportedly made around Rs 1,200 crore in China alone. The dubbed version of Nitesh Tiwari’s movie was released on around 9,000 screens on May 5. Also starring Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra and Zaira Wasim, the film is a biopic of Indian wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita.
Khan’s 3 Idiots and PK have also been very popular in China. Known locally as Uncle Khan, his fame has only increased with Dangal. The Aamir Khan Chinese Fan Club has rolled out a music video to pay tribute to the song Dhaakad from Dangal. Young fans from cities such as Guangzhou, Shangai, Xi’an and Beijing can be seen mimicking the song’s moves on the streets.
