Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Hamburg, Germany on Thursday to attend the two-day G20 Summit, is expected to raise some key subjects affecting India, including free and open trade, migration, sustainable development and global stability, at the meeting.
“On the evening of July 6, I will commence my visit to Hamburg for the 12th G-20 Summit hosted by Germany,” Modi said, spelling out the focus of trip on his Facebook page on Thursday. “Over two days on Juy 7 and 8, I look forward to engaging leaders from other G-20 countries on the vital issues affecting our world today that have a bearing on economic growth, sustainable development, and peace and stability.”
On the sidelines of the Summit, Modi will attend a meeting of Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) leaders. An official bilateral meeting between India and China, however, was ruled out by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday in the wake of a standoff at the border near Sikkim. China had said that the atmosphere for holding a formal or a bilateral meeting was “not ideal”. Government officials had also said they were not sure whether an informal one-on-one meeting with President Xi Jinping would take place.
Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of Argentina, Canada, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Britain and Vietnam. He had also said that progress on decisions since the Hangzhou Summit in 2016 will be reviewed, and there will be deliberations on matters such as terrorism, climate, trade, digitalisation, health, employment, migration, women’s empowerment and partnership with Africa.
The theme for this year’s G20 Summit is “Shaping an Interconnected World”.
