Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia on Tuesday said the Goods and Services Tax regime was successfully implemented and that the price and supply situation was being closely monitored, ANI reported. During a media briefing, Adhia said the implementation of the new tax law has been smooth so far.
A central monitoring panel will meet every Tuesday, the Revenue Secretary said, while adding that manufacturers will have to advertise the change in the prices of their products.
Meanwhile, Opposition legislators in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly staged a protest during a discussion about the passage of the Goods and Services Tax bill on Tuesday. The lawmakers were protesting against allegation that journalists would not be able to carry cellphones and cameras into the House. Speaker Kavinder Gupta apologised, saying there had been a miscommunication” and officials lifted the restrictions a little while later.
Jammu and Kashmir is the only state that did not implement the new tax regime on June 30. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had urged Chief Minister Mehboob Mufti to implement GST, saying there would be have an “adverse impact” on price rise. The Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers association had called for a shutdown as part of a protest against the new tax laws which it sees as a violation of the state’s special status.
