Many in India have been protesting against the the Goods and Services Tax (GST). But the person who chose the background music that played at the end of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India may not have realised what they were doing.
For, as the audience clapped frantically and Modi waved, what emerged from the speakers was Darth Vader’s Imperial March theme from Star Wars. And Darth Vader, whose evil empire is what the rebels fight against, is not exactly the hero of the series.
It can’t have been intentional. But it did offer an unintended throwback to September 2014, when Modi told an audience of hipsters in New York’s Central Park, “May the force be with you.”
