The Jharkhand Police on Friday arrested one person for his alleged involvement in the lynching of a man in Ramgarh district on the suspicion of carrying beef, PTI reported. There are as many as 13 people named in the FIR, Inspector General of Police ML Meena said. Of these, seven have been identified as accused, and arrest warrant for them have been sought by the Ramgarh Police, Hindustan Times reported.

The Ramgarh Police has set up a special investigation team to investigate the murder of Asgar Ansari, reported Hindustan Times. Meanwhile, the criminal investigation department has also separately formed a special team to assist the Ramgarh SIT.

Besides, the Ramgarh Police have said that it was established that some people having allegiance to the issue of cow protection were present at the spot where Ansari was killed, The Indian Express reported, quoting unidentified officials. Ansari’s wife on Friday had claimed that the mob that beat her husband to death mostly included Bajrang Dal activists. Mariam Khatoon, had also denied reports that her husband traded in beef, and said that he was into coal trading. The police is investigating this claim too.

‘Guilty should not go scot-free’

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das (pictured above) directed the state police to take stringent action against those involved in the case. Das said the accused should be punished through fast-track courts and that no one had the right to take the law into their own hands.

The government announced Rs two lakh compensation for Ansari’s family, and Rs 20,000 for the burial. Ansari, who is survived by his wife and six children, was the only breadwinner.
