Rahul Dravid will continue as coach of the India A and under-19 teams for the next two years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced on Friday.
Earlier, Dravid had chosen to stay away from the selection process for the India U-19 squad for their upcoming tour of England as his contract was about to end.
Dravid recently sought clarity about the nature of his contract, after former COA member Ramachandra Guha accused him of conflict of interest, considering his role as mentor of Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Daredevils. Dravid’s earlier 10-month contract allowed him to take on IPL duties during the two months of the T20 tournament. The COA had decided to make all contracts for India coaches to be of two-years length following Guha’s accusations.
Consequently, Dravid has stepped down from his post as mentor of Delhi Daredevils.
The former India captain was first appointed as the coach for the two teams in 2015.
In his first assignment as coach, the ‘A’ side won the triangular series in Australia which also had South Africa as the third team. He repeated that success with the Under-19 team as well, guiding them to the final of the World Cup in 2016.
“Over the last two years, Rahul Dravid has been instrumental in getting young talent into the mix who have proved their worth on the big stage,” BCCI Acting President, CK Khanna said. “We are glad to continue his services for the next two years and are sure that this is a bright sign for Indian cricket which will see many more young talents coming up in the future.”
