The Election Commission on Thursday said elections for the vice president will be conducted on August 5. The poll panel said candidates may file their nomination papers between July 4 and July 18.
Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi, who made the announcement, said the results will also be declared on August 5.
The Election Commission has appointed Rajya Sabha Secretary General Shamsher Sharif returning officer for the polls. Current Vice President Hamid Ansari will remain in office till August 10. The fifteenth vice president of India may be sworn in on August 11, India Today reported.
The process for the presidential election is already underway with the election date set for July 17. National Democratic Alliance candidate Ram Nath Kovind and Opposition candidate Meira Kumar have filed their papers for the top post. The results for the presidential election will be declared on July 20.
