Indian men thumped United States of America 3.5-.5 while the women returned to winning ways with a comfortable 2.5-1.5 win over Poland in the fourth round of the World Team Chess Championship at Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on Tuesday.
After suffering two reversals, the men’s team had managed to register their first win in the competition against Belarus in the third round and built on that success against USA.
B Adhiban and Parimarjan Negi delivered full points with black pieces and Krishnan Sasikiran got the better of Roy Robson to give the Indians a major boost in the overall standings.
While Negi needed 65 moves to force Jeffery Xiong to resign in a king-bishop end game, Adhiban was the more adventurous one and got the better of Varuzhan Akobian in just 41 moves.
Padmini Rout was the lone winner in the clash against Poland, beating Karina Szczepkowska on the third board. It was a welcome win for the women’s team after they suffered a 2.5-1.-5 reversal against Ukraine in the third round.
Both teams teams will next face Egypt in the fifth round.
