Madhur Bhandarkar’s latest movie Indu Sarkar promises to be explosive (and will most definitely lead to dharnas by the Congress party). The July 28 release is set during the Emergency, and stars Kirti Kulhari as a woman with a pronounced stammer. She rebels against her husband (Tota Roy Chowdhury) and becomes a political activist to protest against the excesses of Sanjay Gandhi (Neil Nitin Mukesh) and his goons. Supriya Vinod plays Indira Gandhi, while Anupam Kher portrays an underground leader.

The movie’s main villain appears to be Sanjay Gandhi, who declares, “The Emergency will work not on emotions, but my orders.” As he puts into place a forced sterilisation campaign and harasses the bureaucracy, Kulhari’s poet embraces her revolutionary side.
