United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he will nominate Washington DC lawyer Christopher A Wray to take over as the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“I will be nominating Christopher A Wray, a man of impeccable credentials, to be the new Director of the FBI. Details to follow,” Trump tweeted.
Wray, who had worked for the Justice Department under former President George W Bush, was selected after Trump interviewed several former prosecutors, politicians and law enforcement officials, reported CNBC.
Trump had on May 9 fired the former FBI Director, James Comey, purportedly because of his handling of the Hillary Clinton emails controversy. However, Comey had also been leading an investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, among other things.
A letter informing Comey of his dismissal was delivered to him by an aide of the White House, which said the decision made based on the advice of Attorney-General Jess Sessions and his deputy Rod Rosenstein. It did not state exactly why he was being fired, merely saying he was “not able to effectively lead the Bureau”.
The White House on Monday said Trump will not use his executive privilege to thwart former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey from testifying before the Congress.
