Austrian Dominic Thiem pulled off a sensational 7-6, 6-3, 6-0 defending French Open champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final on Wednesday.
The match not only set up Thiem’s first ever win over the Serb, but threw up some interesting numbers:
- Following the defeat, Novak Djokovic will drop out of the world’s top two for the first time since July 2011.
- It was also the first straight-sets grand slam loss for Djokovic since 2013. (against Murray in the Wimbledon final).
- A year ago, Djokovic had won four straight Slams and made 23 of 24 Slam Semi-finals. All four titles go undefended, only once reaching the semi-finals.
- The upcoming Wimbledon will be the first major since Wimbledon 2014 that Djokovic will go into a slam without holds any of the four slam titles.
- This was Djokovic’s earliest loss in Paris in seven years.

- Prior to today, Djokovic was bageled in final set only once before in 984 career matches (Nishikori, Basel 2011). It was his first 6-0 ‘bagel’ at a Slam since the 2005 US Open.
- This was Thiem’s first win over a top-10 opponent at a Major.
- If Thiem goes onto win the title, he will become the first Austrian player since Thomas Muster, who won the tournament in 1995.
- Thiem has a 34-12 record in the ongoing season, second only to Nadal who is now 41-6 overall in 2017.
- This was Thiem’s 250th tour-level match. He has a record of 156-94.
