An angry Rajinikanth grimaces at us from the posters of Kaala Karikaalan, Pa Ranjith’s upcoming film with the 67-year-old actor. Kaala is the name of the character played by Rajinikanth. In one poster, blood and dust mark his features as his face emerges menacingly out of the darkness. As in Ranjith’s Kabaali (2016), it looks like he is playing his age here too.
The two posters were revealed on Twitter by Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, the actor and producer Dhanush, whose banner Wunderbar films is producing the film. Kaala Karikaalan will be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Shooting will kick off on May 28.
The second poster betrays a lot more about the film. A smiling Rajinikanth is seen sitting on a jeep that has plonked itself in the middle of a swirling landscape of Mumbai’s slums. The MH01 BR 1956 number plate confirms the location.
The last time Rajinikanth acted in a film set in Mumbai (and in Hindi) was Aatank Hi Aatank (1995), if you discount the guest appearances in Bulandi (2000) and Ra.One (2011). The poster lists the names of Santosh Narayanan as the music composer.
