IPL 10 Final, MI vs RPS as it happened: Mumbai Indians pull off a miraculous one-run win

Aiming to complete a hat-trick of titles, the formidable Mumbai Indians will face an imposing challenge from the Rising Pune Supergiant in what promises to be a riveting ‘Grand Finale’ of the 10th Indian Premier League on Sunday in Hyderabad.

Billed as a ‘Maharashtra Derby’, the summit clash is set to be a bit more than an inter-city battle with huge reputations of big stars at stake.

Even on paper, there is not much to choose, especially with Pune beating MI thrice this season including a comprehensive victory in Qualifier 1. But final is a new day and MI can always be fourth time lucky.

12:10 am: Some statistics to wrap it up. It was one heck of a IPL final. At the halfway stage it seemed like it was going to be an one-sided affair but as it turned out, it was one of the most exciting finals. With that, we bid goodbye. Curtains on 10 years of IPL.

After 19 overs Rising Pune Supergiant 119/3: After just 4 runs from the first 4 balls, Smith brings out the big hit just when it was needed. A six over long off and a 2 to finish the over. It’s 50 up for the skipper but it’d mean squat if RPS can’t cross the line.

After 18 overs Rising Pune Supergiant 107/3: It was shaping into an excellent over from Malinga, with 2 runs from 4 balls but Smith flicks over fine leg for four. Still 7 runs from the over is not bad.

Bumrah with the crucial, crucial 19th over...

After 17 overs Rising Pune Supergiant 100/3: What an over from Jasprit Bumrah! Is that the decisive over? 3 runs and the massive wicket of MS Dhoni. Tries to cut past point but its an edge to Parthiv. And then there’s a massive appeal for LBW against Tiwary, but it’s just outside off.

Pune need 30 from 3 overs now.

After 16 overs Rising Pune Supergiant 97/2: And there’s the big over that Pune needed. Rohit’s decision to go to Krunal backfires as Dhoni and Smith plunder 17 runs from that over. A cut off the back foot from Dhoni and then an incredible switch hit from Smith for six.

After 15 overs Rising Pune Supergiant 83/2, required rate 9.40: Six runs from Malinga’s over and the run rate creeps up again. An almost miraculous escape for Steve Smith as an yorker hits his foot and rolls millimeters wide of the stumps.

After 14 overs Rising Pune Supergiant 77/2: This is now turning into an excellent phase for Mumbai. 2 runs from Karn Sharma’s over and 4 runs from Krunal’s. The required rate has gone up close to 9. Two huge appeals in those overs too. First an LBW against Dhoni by Karn, but replays show it might just be going over. Smith then survives a caught behind appeal.

And guess who has walked out to bat? It’s MS Dhoni in his 7th IPL final, to a massive roar from the crowd.

After 12 overs Rising Pune Supergiant 71/2: Rahane’s fine innings comes to an end and how! It’s a brilliant diving catch from Pollard at long on. How important is that moment going to be? Smith needs to get a move on from the other end and responds with a four past point. He’s on 18 off 26 now.

After 10 overs, Rising Pune Supergiant 58/1: A slight hint of pressure building on Pune now. Are Rahane and Smith taking it too slow? Just 2 runs from the Karn Sharma over but Rahane realises the rate is creeping over 7 and responds with a fine pull shot for 4 off a short ball from Johnson.

After 8 overs, Rising Pune Supergiant 48/1: Sensible from Rahane and Smith, dealing in singles and twos. 5 runs each from Karn and Bumrah’s overs. Required rate still very much under control.

The dropped catch that could cost Mumbai the match?

After 6 overs, Rising Pune Supergiant 38/1: RPS would not mind that powerplay at all. Malinga bowled a brilliant 4th over for just 2 runs but perhaps more crucially, saw Krunal put down a sitter at short-cover. A brilliant slower ball and Rahane hit straight to the senior Pandya, who dropped it. Rahane has since hit two glrorious fours since then. 9 from Karn Sharma’s over and 6 from Malinga’s next.

After 3 overs Rising Pune Supergiant 21/1: Bumrah into the attack and Bumrah gets the breakthrough. It’s a very tight LBW call by the umpire. Bumrah gets one to dip in, it hits the pad and bat almost simultaneously (perhaps pad first) but it was bouncing over, says hawkeye. Rahane meanwhile continues to time the ball and playing sensible cricket.

After 2 overs, Rising Pune Supergiant 14/0: Mitchell Johnson from the other end and this is sensible no-nonsense cricket from Pune. 4 singles from the first 5 balls and 4 leg-byes to finish the over.

After 1 over, Rising Pune Supergiant 6/0: A steady start for RPS... just what Smith would have wanted. Krunal starts for MI and Rahane makes it a good start with a cover drive for 4 off the last ball.

After 20 overs, Mumbai Indians 129/8: Krunal dismissed off the last ball but not before putting together 50 runs with Johnson for the 8th wicket. A very handy 47 off 38 balls. A four and a six in the final over too.

Something to fight with for Mumbai?

After 19 overs, Mumbai Indians 115/7: This is actually turning into a nice little partnership for Mumbai. Krunal and Johnson are firing at the end. 13 runs from Christian’s over, with Johnson’s straight-swat for six the highlight. And then Unadkat concedes 10 from his last over, as Krunal hits a six – launches into the crowd past long-on.

After 17 overs, Mumbai Indians 92/7: Two overs without a wicket for Mumbai as Mitchell Johnson and Krunal focus on playing the 20 overs. 5 runs from Christian and 6 from Unadkat’s over.

After 15 overs Mumbai Indians 81/7: And the wickets continue to fall... it’s almost as if the Mumbai batsmen don’t want to stick around for long. Christian drops a catch at wide slip off Karn Sharma but the batsmen are both standing in the middle of the pitch and it’s a run-out.

After 14 overs Mumbai Indians 79/6: Dan Christian sends back Hardik Pandya with a pretty standard good length delivery. Straigh-forward LBW decision. It’s all going downhill for Mumbai..

After 13 overs Mumbai Indians 76/5: Two wicket-less overs to follow the two-wicket over from Zampa. Washington finishes with amazing figures of 4-0-13-0 with just 1 run from his final over. The Pandya brothers take it a bit easy. And then 10 runs from the Zampa over as Hardik releases the pressure with a lovely straight six.

After 11 overs, Mumbai Indians 65/5: The big-wickets in one over for Zampa! First, Rohit Sharma is gone and it’s yet another stunning catch: Shardul Thakur takes a superb high catch at the mid-wicket boundary. And then it’s Pollard. An unique field from RPS (we daresay Dhoni) who keep a fielder dead straight behind the bowler and Pollard hits it straight to the man.

After 10 overs Mumbai Indians 56/3: Two quite overs for MI after losing Rayudu. First Zampa comes back and concedes 3 singles and a wide – not great turn but excellent lines and lengths. Then the mighty-impressive Washington Sundar concedes just 2 runs off the first 5 balls before a chip cover drive from Krunal for 4.

After 8 overs Mumbai Indians 46/3: And the recovery doesn’t last long. Steve Smith with a captain’s throw (is that a thing?) and a direct hit sends Rayudu back. And almost disastrous running between Krunal and Rohit off the next ball, but they somehow avoid the run out.

After 7 overs Mumbai Indians 41/2: Another excellent over for Mumbai... Zampa comes into the attack and his hit for 9 runs. Rayudu in the act this time with a cover driven four, and then singles.

After 6 overs Mumbai Indians 32/2: And just like that Mumbai are up and running... it’s been a whirlwind start to the IPL final. Rohit Sharma is on song as Lockie Ferguson comes in and concedes four boundaries. The pace goes against the Aussie as Rohit guides the ball past point first, then to fine leg and then to the third man. The final shot is a statement, standing up and punching past cover.

After 5 overs Mumbai Indians 16/2: RPS are all over the Mumbai Indians at the start of this final. First a 2-run over from Washington and a tight start from Shardul Thakur as well, conceding just 5.

We are still recovering from the Unadkat catch. What a screamer!

After 3 overs, Mumbai Indians 9/2: DREAM START FOR UNADKAT! Dear goodness, what an over from the RPS seamer. It’s raining cutters and it’s got him two wickets, both the openers. First Parthiv gets one that bounces more than he thought, and the pull goes straight to mid-on. And then an absolute screamer of a return catch to send Simmons back.

After 2 overs, Mumbai Indians 7/0: 17-years of age, Washington starts off with a wonderful over in a high-pressure match. Just 4 runs. Attacking Parthiv’s stumps, not giving any room whatsoever.

After 1 over, Mumbai Indians 3/0: An excellent start for Unadkat and Pune. Just the 3 singles in that over as Parthiv and Simmons gauge the pitch. Already the off-cutters are in full view.

• Pune hold a mental advantage over Mumbai as they have beaten their state neighbours all three matches the two have played in this edition of IPL, including the first Qualifier at their home stadium Wankhede.
• Pune’s bowling has been one of their biggest strengths this season, they have an overall economy rate of 7.93 this season, which is the best among all teams.
• The toss will be crucial for both teams, but for Pune it has an added advantage of history. Pune has gone on to win the match on each of the five occasions captain Steve Smith has won the toss.
• Mumbai have the big match experience having played three finals and won the title twice before, in 2013 and 2015 and are looking to become the first team to win three IPL titles. In fact, skipper Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh and Ambati Rayudu, have all been part of both victorious campaigns.
• Mumbai’s batting may have fluctuated this season, but they have made it count, especially when setting totals. They have the best death overs scoring rate in IPL 2017 with a run rate of 10.72.
