At least one person was killed and several others were injured when a speeding vehicle drove into pedestrians at New York City’s Times Square on Thursday. Emergency responders were pressed into action and the New York Police department cordoned off the area. The Fire Department said this was not a terror incident, despite initial concerns. The suspect, who was driving a red sedan, is in custody and was believed to have been either drunk or on drugs, according to The New York Times.
Eyewitnesses told Reuters that the vehicle came charging down the wrong side of the road and climbed onto the pavement. The incident took place near 7th Avenue and 45th Street, BBC reported. Times Square is one of the busiest tourist spots in the world.
