Around 80 schoolgirls, 13 of whom have been on a hunger strike in Rewari for a week, called off their agitation after Haryana government agreed to their demands on Wednesday, CNN News18 reported.

The girls were protesting against harassment by local boys. They had demanded that their village high school be upgraded to a senior secondary institution so that they do not have to encounter miscreants on their four kilometre-long journey to the nearest school in another village.

The state government issued a notification agreeing to the upgradation of the government school and other demands, ABP Live reported.

“We cannot tolerate this harassment. Police are trying to end the strike but we will continue till we see written orders from the government,” a Class 11 student had told CNN-News18. Superintendent of Police in Rewari Sangeeta Kalia, however, had told the CNN-News18 that her department had not received any complaints of harassment from anyone in that area in the past year.
