Two Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were killed in an encounter with security personnel in Waripora in North Kashmir’s Handwara on Sunday. A search operation was also conducted.
Handwara Ghulam Jeelani, superintendent of police, confirmed the killing of two militants. “Both the slain militants are foreigners and we are trying to ascertain their identity. Since Lashkar-e-Toiba is active in the region, we suspect the militants are from the same outfit,” he said.
Having received intelligence about the presence of militants in Waripora in Kupwara district, a joint team of police and the 21 Rashtriya Rifles cordoned off the area, according to a report. A gunbattle broke out between the militants and security personnel.
No security official was injured, The Times of India reported. The Army said two weapons were also recovered from the spot.
