Under the Human Resource Development Ministry’s latest programme “Vidya, Veerta Abhiyan”, universities and educational institutions across India will soon have to put up portraits of soldiers who were felicitated with the Param Veer Chakra, PTI reported on Monday. The programme will be launched on Tuesday by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar to encourage varsities to display a “Wall of Heroes”.
“To begin with, Vice Chancellors from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islami, IIT Delhi and other institutions will receive the portraits from him [Javadekar],” PTI quoted an unidentified official as saying.
A group of former Army men had approached JNU Vice Chancellor M Jagadeesh Kumar to display the portraits of Indian soldiers who have died to instil “nationalism” among the students, PTI reported. The demand had been raised last year after the sedition charges that were slapped on JNU students for allegedly shouting anti-national slogans on the campus during an event in February 2016.
