Shanto Mitra, former coach of national team and East Bengal captain Shanto Mitra passed away at a Kolkata hospital at 75 after battling cancer for long.
Mitra was captain of EB when the Red-and-Golds beat Irani club PAS Tehran in the final of the IFA Shield in 1970. Before retiring in 1975, Mitra was part of a select group of East Bengal players who won six straight Calcutta Football League titles from 1970 to 1975.
Mitra also played football for Wari FC and Bengal Napur Railway FC (BNRF).
Later, he was assistant to head coach of the Indian team Milovan Ciric, from Yugoslavia. The team played at tournaments like the Nehru Cup in 1984 which they won. He was also the team manager at the 1984 Olympic qualifiers.
He was also sheriff of Kolkata city till Utpal Chatterjee took over from Mitra in 2010.
