Poland on Thursday extended support to India’s bid for Nuclear Suppliers Group membership and a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, PTI reported. Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo conveyed the assurance to Vice President Hamid Ansari, who has been in Poland’s capital city of Warsaw since Wednesday.
“We are happy to have Poland’s support for India’s claim for permanent membership of an expanded UN security council,” Ansari said. Poland is a member of the 48-member NSG.
India and Poland agreed to increase cooperation in railway, defence sector, solar energy, food processing, clean coal, besides signing an agreement in the agriculture sector. The agreement was signed by Minister of State of Small Industries Giriraj Singh and Polish Agriculture Minister Krzysztof Jurgiel.
Ansari said that there was a need to adopt the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations. “As vibrant democracies, we also share views on the need to adopt a comprehensive and principled stance against the scourge of terrorism,” he said.
India’s investments in Poland amount to around $3 billion, while there is about $600 million Polish investments in India.
China has been against India’s entry to the international body, which monitors and controls the export of materials or technology that can be used to create nuclear weapons. The Chinese government had said that Beijing had made its position clear on the admission of countries like India and Pakistan, which are not signatories to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, to the NSG.
In November 2016, the Chinese government had said that Delhi’s application would be considered only after the NSG finalises rules on granting membership to countries that were not signatories to the NPT.
