Nannamal is just another resident of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, except she’s just two years short of turning 100. And she shows no signs of slowing down. For Nannamal leads three generations of yoga practitioners, and, at 98, continues to teach and practise in her hometown, bending her body with a suppleness that would put most youngsters to shame.
The instructor, who has won numerous awards and gold medals in competitions across India, claims to have never been to a hospital. The video above, by BBC India, showcasing her feat has gone expectedly viral, garnering close to 12 million views since it was uploaded on Monday.
Ninety-eight seems to be a good age for yoga. In 2016, 98-year-old Täo Porchon-Lynch from Hartsdale, New York became a global celebrity for being the “world’s oldest yoga teacher”. At the rate Nanammal is going, she might provide serious competition for that title.
