The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday imposed a month-long ban on social networking websites and instant messaging services in the Valley, reported ANI. Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Skype and YouTube are among the 22 platforms shortlisted by the local administration. 3G and 4G internet services on cellphones were suspended in the region on April 17.

The situation in Kashmir has been volatile for the past few weeks since disturbing videos surfaced from the region capturing violent clashes between security forces and civilians. Students in the Valley have been protesting against alleged atrocities by security personnel.

At least 24 people, including 12 security personnel, were injured on Monday after fresh clashes broke out between security forces and students at Srinagar’s Sri Pratap Higher Secondary School and College. The incident took place on the first day educational institutions had opened in the region after remaining shut for five days owing to the violence and protests.

On April 15, at least 54 students sustained injuries during clashes with security personnel outside Degree College in South Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama town. Witnesses said the incident took place when several students exited the college premises to stage a demonstration against a checkpoint installed by local police and the Central Reserve Police Force outside the campus.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
