India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas clinched the doubles title at the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday. The unseeded duo beat the Spanish pair of Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 in a match that lasted for an hour and 14 minutes.
The title is the first of the season for Bopanna and Cuevas, who beat the seventh seeds in a thrilling encounter. The Indo-Uruguayan pair won the first set with ease bagging it 6-3.
However, the Spanish pair came back strong and took the second set 3-6 to stretch the match into the decider. Bopanna and Cuevas, though, completely dominating their opponents in the tie-breaker and took it 10-4.
Bopanna has so far enjoyed an eventful 2017. He won the Chennai Open in January with partner Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan before losing in the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in which he teamed up with Poland’s Marcin Matkowski.
