In another blow for Manchester United, star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to injury, according to various news reports. The 35-year-old had injured his right knee during their Europa League clash against Anderlecht.
The Red Devils have progressed to the semi-finals of the European competition thanks to an extra-time goal from Marcus Rashford. However, Ibrahimovic joins a long list of injured players at Old Trafford, after Marcos Rojo also hobbled off against Anderlecht as well. Juan Mata, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are also out injured.
According to a report in ESPN, Ibrahimovic underwent scans in Manchester on Friday with Gianluca Di Marzio, a member of the club’s medical staff confirming that the striker suffered damage to his cruciate ligament.
Ibrahimovic, who has scored 28 goals in 46 appearances for United, is expected to undergo surgery, followed by a programme of rehabilitation. This might rule him out for the entire season and reports suggest that he may have played his last match for United as well. The Swede has been heavily linked with moves away from Old Trafford, with MLS side Los Angeles FC reportedly offering him a five million pounds a season to lure him to the United States.
