World No 1 Andy Murray was knocked out in the round of 16 of the Monte Carlo Masters after losing 6-2, 2-6, 5-7 to an inspired Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain, who came back from a 0-4 deficit in the third game to clinch victory.
Murray, who was playing only his second match after a month-long injury-lay off, looked off-colour, but managed to win the first set comfortably. The 15th-seeded Spaniard came back strongly in the second as Murray failed to keep pace with his opponent, ranked 24th in the world.
The Brit, who crashed out in the second round at Indian Wells in March, regained the momentum in the third set and romped to a 4-0 lead. Ramos-Vinolas produced a remarkable comeback from that point to level things up, before taking the game on serve.
Ramos-Vinolas will next face Marin Cilic in the quarter-final.
