Third seeds Rohan Bopanna and Marcin Matkowski were upset in the quarter-final of the ATP Marrakech Open on Thursday. The Indo-Polish pair were defeated by the British-Croatian duo of Dominic Inglot and Mate Pavic in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 in 58 minutes.
While both teams put in about 67% of their first serves, Inglot and Pavic won slightly more points off their first serves as compared to their opponents – 90% to 81%. Bopanna and Matkowski were, however, quite poor in their conversion of second service points. They won only 31% points off their second serves to Inglot and Pavic’s 60%.
Inglot and Pavic’s superior serving on the day also accounted for Bopanna and Matkowski hardly getting break point chances to go up in the match. The third seeds received only one break point opportunity in the second set, but Inglot and Pavic saved it promptly. On the other hand, three breaks of serve in the match – two in the opening set and one in the second set – ended the higher ranked team’s prospects of advancing along in the tournament.
Top-seeds Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram, who defeated the Argentine team of Guillermo Duran and Andres Molteni will take on Inglot and Pavic for a place in the final.
