PV Sindhu beat Indonesia’s Fitriani, fighting back from a game down to win 19-21, 21-17, 21-8 on Thursday in a match that lasted for an hour to move to the quarter-final of the Singapore Open.
The Indonesian held her nerve to get the better of the fifth seed in the first game by a slender margin. There was little to chose from between the two in the second game too but Sindhu rallied to take the game to the decider.
The Olympic silver medallist was in in rousing form in the third, racing away to a 11-4 lead. Fitirani was unable to mount a challenge from there, and Sindhu sealed the tie with a comfortable 21-8 win.
The 22-year-old will face Olympic champion Carolina Marin in the last-eight after the Spaniard beat Chinese Taipei’s Chia Hsin Lee 21-7, 21-11.
