Renowned painter Jamini Roy, whose paintings are not only critically admired but also something of a staple in Bengali middle class homes – through reproductions and prints if not the original – was known for moving away from Western styles towards more Indian influences. On Tuesday, Google celebrated his 130th birth anniversary with a doodle inspired by his painting titled Black Horse.
Roy, who was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1955, was born in 1887 in the Beliatore village of the Bankura district, West Bengal. The documentary above, made in 1989 by Debabrata Roy, and produced by Films’ Division, visits the legendary painter’s hometown to chart his stylistic influences.
