Rising Pune Supergiant’s MS Dhoni has been reprimanded for breaching the Indian Premier League code of conduct during his team’s seven-wicket win against Mumbai Indians in Pune on Thursday.
While the reason why he was reprimanded by match referee Manu Nayyar was not specified in the statement released by the IPL, ESPNCricinfo reported that it was due to Dhoni’s joking gesture of calling for a DRS review when Pune were bowling.
“MS Dhoni admitted the Level 1 offence [Article 2.1.1] for conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game,” read the IPL’s statement. “For Level 1 breaches of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” it added.
In the 15th over of the Mumbai Indians’ innings on Thursday, Dhoni was spotted jokingly calling for a DRS review after umpire S Ravi turned down a close shout for leg-before off Imran Tahir’s bowling. Kieran Pollard was the batsman at the crease. DRS is not available during the IPL.
The Pune outfit won the game by seven wickets, with captain Steve Smith leading the charge with an unbeaten 84 off 54 balls.
