Delhi Daredevils suffered yet another setback ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season as flamboyant batsman Shreyas Iyer was ruled out for at least a week due to chicken pox.
Iyer is now back in Mumbai recuperating from the illness and is expected to join the squad after getting fully fit. It may take around a week before he starts training again, reported PTI.
Iyer’s absence during the first week is a big worry for the perennial underachievers with two of their biggest overseas recruits – South Africans Quinton de Kock and JP Duminy – already out of the tournament. Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews is also out for a better part of the tournament as he is recovering from a long injury lay-off.
The swashbuckling batsman was a big hit for his franchise during the 2015 edition, where he scored 439 from 14 games and won the IPL Emerging Player of the Year award.
Iyer put in stellar performances for Mumbai in 2016-’17 season as well, where he finished as his side’s top run-getter as they finished beaten finalists in the Ranji Trophy. The 22-year-old also scored a double hundred against Australia in a warm-up game and earned a maiden call up in the Test squad in place of injured India skipper Virat Kohli at Dharamsala.
