India’s PV Sindhu jumped to a career-high World No 2 rank on Thursday, following her maiden India Open title win last Sunday by beating Olympic champion Carolina Marin 21-19, 21-16 in New Delhi last Sunday.
In the latest update to the Badminton World Federation rankings, Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying stayed on top of the table while Sindhu moved up three places to become second. Carolina Marin, Sindhu’s opponent in the India Open final, stayed at third.
Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, who was previously in the second spot, slipped to fourth place while South Korea’s Ji-hyun Sung, who lost to Sindhu in the India Open semi-final, slipped from fourth to fifth. Saina Nehwal also slipped one spot to ninth place.
Sindhu recently suffered a first round exit at the hands of China’s Chen Yufei on Wednesday at the Malaysia Open. Winning the tournament could have given her the chance to top the rankings.
