Tenth seed Johanna Konta beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 in the final of the women’s singles draw to lift the Miami Open title and win her third WTA title to date. In the process, she also became the first British woman to win the Miami Open.
The 25-year-old from the United Kingdom battled hard in the first set with her Danish opponent levelling scores at 2-2 and 4-4. However, Konta capitalised on two double faults in succession from Wozniacki to go up 5-4. Staring down the barrell at 15-40 in the next game, the World No 11 unleashed a fierce succession of serves to take the game to deuce and then win the first set.
Konta won the first game in the second set but Wozniacki returned strongly to take a 2-1 lead and then called for a medical timeout. Both the players held serve till 3-3 before Konta raced to a 0-40 lead in the fourth game and managed to get an important break to take a crucial lead. She then kept her composure to win the next two games and take the set 6-3 to win her first top-tier WTA title.
