India completed a clean sweep at the Asia Pacific Chess Championship for Visually Challenged in Bengaluru on Friday, with Kishan Gangolli, Ashvin Makwana, and Soundarya Kumar Pradhan taking the top three positions respectively.
Gangolli, from Karnataka, won the competition with a total of seven points after recording a draw against Aryan B Joshi in the eighth and final round. Both Makwana and Pradhan finished with six points after settling for draws in their final match. The ratings decided their second and third positions respectively.
A national champion, Gangolli was jointly top of the table with Bangladesh’s Ejaz Husain after the first three rounds. However, the player from Karnataka took the lead in the fourth round after beating Husain in a marathon match. Husain, who was the highest rated FIDE-rated player in the tournament, finally finished seventh.
The first-placed Gangolli will receive Rs 50,000 as prize money, with Makwana and Pradhan getting Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively.
