Swiss great Roger Federer beat Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets to advance to the round of 16 at the Miami Open on Monday. Federer beat Potro 6-3, 6-4 to register his 15th win out of 16 matches this season.
The 18-time Grand Slam champion will now face Spain’s 14th seed Roberto Bautista Agut. The Spaniard beat American Sam Querrey 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. “I feel like I earned it more,” said Federer to BBC, the champion in 2005 and 2006. “I was more the aggressor. It was more my racket, and I like it that way.”
Kyrgios skips past Ivo Karlovic
Australia’s Nick Kyrgios had to dig deep against big-serving Ivo Karlovic as he beat him in three sets to progress to the fourth round. Kyrgios won 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(2) victory at Key Biscayne on Monday. Kyrgios will now face eighth-seed David Goffin, who beat Darian King 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Wawrinka to face Zverev
Stan Wawrinka beat Malek Jaziri 6-3,6-3 to progress to the next round of the Miami Open. Wawrinka was at ease as he dismantled his opponent. His backhand was working to perfection as Jaziri was clueless against the Swiss. Wawrinka will now face Alexander Zverev, who won an epic encounter against American John Isner. The German won 6-7(5), 7-6(7), 7-6(5), saving three match points, in a game that lasted for two hours and 40 minutes.
