At least 18 people were injured in a shopping mall in Hong Kong on Monday when an escalator suddenly accelerated in the reverse direction. The accident took place because of a malfunction in a chain and an emergency brake. The incident took place in the Langham Place complex.
Two technicians have been arrested for “perverting the course of justice”. They have been accused of tampering with the escalator, which might have caused the accident. They both work for the Otis Elevator Company. Their employer told BBC that they would seek clarification from the administration about the arrests.
